RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Tapak liman (Elephantopus scaber) is a traditional Indonesian medicinal plant that has been used for generations in herbal preparations. This low-growing herb contains bioactive compounds such as sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, triterpenoids, and phenolic compounds that have attracted scientific attention for their potential anti-inflammatory and therapeutic activities.
A review published in the journal Journal of Ethnopharmacology reported that Elephantopus scaber contains several secondary metabolites associated with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant effects. Researchers have investigated these compounds to understand the mechanisms behind its traditional applications.
One of the most studied properties of tapak liman is its potential ability to regulate inflammatory responses. Sesquiterpene lactones found in the plant have been investigated because of their interaction with inflammatory pathways involved in cellular responses.
Traditional communities have used tapak liman for various purposes, including supporting general wellness and recovery. Modern research continues to evaluate its phytochemical composition and possible applications in herbal medicine.
The pharmaceutical industry has shown interest in plants containing naturally occurring anti-inflammatory compounds. Extracts from Elephantopus scaber are being explored as potential sources of botanical ingredients, although most evidence remains at laboratory stages.
Although tapak liman has a history of traditional use, standardized clinical studies are still limited. Proper identification, dosage control, and professional guidance are important when considering concentrated herbal preparations.
