RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Sandalwood (Santalum album), known in Indonesia as cendana, is one of the most historically valued aromatic plants. The tree produces sandalwood oil rich in alpha-santalol and beta-santalol, compounds responsible for its distinctive fragrance and its long-standing use in traditional medicine and cosmetics.

A study published in the journal Planta Medica reported that sandalwood oil contains sesquiterpene alcohols with biological activities, including antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory potential. These compounds have contributed to the continued interest in sandalwood as a botanical ingredient.

One of the most important applications of sandalwood is in skincare. Sandalwood oil has traditionally been used for sensitive skin preparations, and research has explored its potential soothing and antimicrobial properties in topical formulations.

Sandalwood is also widely used in aromatherapy because its warm, woody fragrance is associated with relaxation and emotional balance. The aroma compounds are believed to influence psychological responses through olfactory pathways.

The cosmetic industry continues to value sandalwood as a premium ingredient for perfumes, creams, and skincare products. Its fragrance stability and botanical origin make it highly desirable in natural beauty formulations.

Although sandalwood oil has a long history of use, essential oils should always be properly diluted before topical application. Individuals with sensitive skin should perform a patch test to reduce the risk of irritation.
