RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Tropical almond (Terminalia catappa), locally known as ketapang, is a coastal plant widely found in Indonesia with growing scientific interest beyond its environmental value. Its leaves, fruits, and seeds contain tannins, flavonoids, fatty acids, and phenolic compounds that have been investigated for nutritional, cosmetic, and biological applications.

A study published in the journal Food Chemistry reported that Terminalia catappa contains phenolic compounds and antioxidant substances, particularly in its leaves and fruit pulp. These compounds contribute to the plant’s protective biological activities.

One of the unique advantages of ketapang lies in its seeds, which contain edible oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids. These oils have attracted attention as potential nutritional ingredients and sources of plant-based lipids.

Ketapang leaves have also been traditionally used for skin and hair applications. Plant extracts containing tannins and polyphenols are being explored for their antimicrobial properties and potential use in natural personal care products.

In environmental and industrial applications, ketapang is increasingly recognized as a multipurpose plant. Research into its extracts supports opportunities for developing sustainable products from parts of the tree that are often considered waste.

Although ketapang shows promising biological properties, many studies remain at the laboratory stage. Further clinical research is required to determine specific health applications and appropriate usage levels.
