RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Cumin (Cuminum cyminum), commonly known as jintan putih, is an aromatic spice widely used in Indonesian and global culinary traditions. Beyond its role as a flavor enhancer, cumin seeds contain cuminaldehyde, terpenes, flavonoids, and essential oils that have attracted research interest for digestive and metabolic health.

According to a review published in the journal Food Chemistry, cumin contains various phytochemicals with antioxidant and bioactive properties. Researchers identified essential oil components, particularly cuminaldehyde, as important contributors to the characteristic aroma and potential health effects of cumin.

One of the most studied areas of cumin research is its impact with metabolism. Several experimental and clinical studies have investigated cumin extracts for their potential influence on blood glucose regulation and lipid metabolism, although results vary depending on dosage and study design.

Cumin has also traditionally been used to support digestion. Its aromatic compounds may stimulate digestive enzyme activity and help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort, explaining its widespread use in herbal preparations after meals.

The cosmetic and wellness industries have shown interest in cumin due to its essential oils and plant compounds. These components are being explored for antimicrobial applications and as botanical ingredients in personal care products.

Although cumin is safe as a culinary spice, concentrated supplements should be consumed cautiously. More research is still needed to establish standardized therapeutic doses and confirm long-term safety.
