RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) is an aromatic herb that has attracted scientific attention for its potential effects on memory, concentration, and its application in personal care. Traditionally used as a culinary herb and fragrance ingredient, rosemary contains bioactive compounds such as rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, and essential oils rich in 1,8-cineole that contribute to its biological activities.

A study published in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology reported that the aroma of rosemary essential oil was associated with improved cognitive performance in human participants. Researchers suggested that volatile compounds from rosemary may influence attention and memory processes through interactions with the nervous system.

One of the most extensively researched aspects of rosemary is its relationship with brain function. Compounds such as 1,8-cineole have been investigated for their effects on neurotransmitter activity, potentially supporting alertness, concentration, and mental performance.

Rosemary is also widely explored in hair and scalp care products. The essential oil has gained popularity because preliminary studies suggest it may support scalp health and hair growth by improving local circulation and maintaining a healthier scalp environment.

Beyond cognitive and cosmetic applications, rosemary contains antioxidant compounds that have encouraged its use in food preservation and pharmaceutical research. Carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid are among the compounds being studied for cellular protection mechanisms.

Although rosemary is commonly used as a culinary herb, concentrated rosemary essential oil should be used with caution. High doses may cause irritation or adverse effects, and pregnant individuals or people with certain medical conditions should seek professional advice before therapeutic use.
