RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is an aromatic herb increasingly studied beyond its culinary role because of its powerful essential oil compounds. The plant contains carvacrol, thymol, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds that have attracted scientific attention for antimicrobial applications and natural food preservation.
A study published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology reported that oregano essential oil exhibits antimicrobial activity due to the presence of carvacrol and thymol. These compounds can affect microbial cell membranes, reducing the ability of certain bacteria and fungi to survive.
One of the most important research areas involving oregano is its potential as a natural antimicrobial agent. Scientists are exploring oregano extracts as alternatives to synthetic preservatives, particularly in food systems where microbial control is crucial.
Oregano also contains compounds that demonstrate anti-inflammatory activity in experimental studies. These findings have encouraged further investigation into its possible role in supporting health through modulation of inflammatory pathways.
The food and cosmetic industries have utilized oregano essential oil because of its strong aroma and bioactive properties. It is being studied for applications in natural preservatives, aromatherapy products, and botanical formulations.
Despite these promising laboratory findings, undiluted oregano oil should not be consumed excessively. Essential oils are highly concentrated substances and require proper dilution and controlled use.
