RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Candlenut (Aleurites moluccanus) is an Indonesian plant traditionally valued as a cooking ingredient and natural beauty treatment. The seeds contain high levels of vegetable oil rich in unsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid, oleic acid, and other lipid compounds that make it valuable for food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications.
According to research published in the journal Industrial Crops and Products, candlenut oil contains fatty acid profiles that provide moisturizing and protective properties. The study highlighted that the composition of unsaturated fatty acids contributes to the stability and functionality of candlenut-derived products.

One of the most popular traditional uses of candlenut oil is for hair care. Indonesian communities have used kemiri oil to support hair appearance, improve scalp condition, and maintain hair moisture. The lipid components in the oil help coat hair fibers and reduce dryness.
Beyond hair applications, candlenut oil has potential benefits for skin care. The presence of essential fatty acids supports the skin barrier function by helping maintain hydration and softness. This has encouraged the development of natural skincare products using plant-based oils.
Research has also examined the antioxidant potential of candlenut seeds. Phenolic compounds found in the plant may contribute to protection against oxidative stress, although the antioxidant activity varies depending on extraction methods and processing conditions.
Despite its cosmetic popularity, raw candlenut seeds should not be consumed carelessly because they contain compounds that may cause digestive discomfort. Proper processing is necessary to ensure safety for food and medicinal applications.
