RRI.CO.ID, BOGOR - A warm foot soak is suggested to help relieve migraine symptoms, according to researchers. That was stated by IPB University Faculty of Medicine lecturer Christy Efiyanti.
On IPB University website, 27 February 2026, she explained that studies on warm compresses or warm foot soaking for migraine patients already exist. "But the subjects remain limited," Christy said.
he stated that the effect of warm foot soaking on head blood circulation remains spSeculative. Current scientific explanations have not conclusively clarified physiological mechanisms connecting hydrotherapy and migraine relief.
Physiologically, sensory stimulation from hydrotherapy may dominate pain signals by activating large diameter myelinated fibers. This condition can reduce transmission of small nociceptive impulses through neural gating processes mechanisms.
Both hypothermia and hyperthermia are known to produce strong physiological and hemodynamic effects within the body. Exposure to warm water may decrease sympathetic activity while increasing vagal tone responses gradually in patients.
Regarding effectiveness across different headache types, current studies remain limited specifically to migraine cases. She noted that sufficient scientific evidence for other headache categories has not yet been found.
For people who are interested in trying the method, warm water temperature is recommended around forty degrees Celsius. Lavender oil may be added, with soaking duration approximately twenty minutes before drying feet immediately.
She emphasized that the practice can be attempted as a complementary therapy alongside standard migraine management. Medical consultation remains necessary, especially for individuals experiencing recurrent or severe migraine conditions regularly.
