RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum), locally known as daun salam, is a traditional culinary herb widely used in Indonesian cuisine. Beyond its role as a flavor enhancer, this plant has attracted scientific attention due to its antioxidant compounds, flavonoids, tannins, and essential oils that may contribute to metabolic and protective health effects.
A study published in the journal Pharmacognosy Journal in 2018 reported that Syzygium polyanthum leaves contain bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties. Researchers found that extracts from the leaves demonstrated the ability to neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative stress.
One of the most studied areas regarding bay leaves is their potential relationship with blood glucose regulation. Experimental studies have suggested that compounds in Syzygium polyanthum may influence carbohydrate metabolism and glucose levels, although further clinical studies are required to confirm effectiveness in humans.
Bay leaves are also investigated for their antimicrobial properties. Essential oils and phenolic compounds present in the leaves have demonstrated inhibitory effects against certain microorganisms, supporting their traditional use as a natural ingredient for maintaining food quality.

In addition to health applications, bay leaf extract is being explored for development into functional foods and herbal products. Its availability in Indonesia and long history of culinary use make it an attractive candidate for further research in nutraceutical development.
Although commonly consumed in cooking, medicinal use of concentrated bay leaf extracts should be approached carefully. Scientific evidence regarding therapeutic dosage and long-term supplementation remains limited, and professional guidance is recommended for individuals with specific health conditions.
