KBRN.CO.ID, Jakarta - Empathy in our reaction can help people fight against suicidal thoughts. This can be done by just being there for others.
In an interview with RRI Voice of Indonesia on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, psychologist from State University of Jakarta (UNJ) Zarina Akbar explained that empathic reaction can come in the form of questions. These reactions should be given when others are signaling suicidal thoughts.
"We can ask them, what is going on? Are you okay? Do you want to share?," said Zarina. She affirmed that this empathic response is very important and necessary in such situation.
Zarina explained that people with suicidal ideation or behavior might be giving off signals. The first is they might discuss death-related topics and express the feeling of being trapped or under pressure.
These people might be searching for methods or making preparations. While the third is they will be leaving goodbye messages or giving away valued possession to loved ones.
The other signs are changes in behavior. People with suicidal thoughts also might become more quiet or withdraw from social interactions.
Zarina Akbar affirmed that the most effective immediate approach to these signs is to give empathic reaction directly to the person. However, she recommended not to give advice since they need empathy more than suggestions.
"They need us to reflect their emotions," she said. The suicide ideation comes up when they feel lacking of support, emotional attention, and affection.
Then, the best approach is just be there for them and listen to what they want to share. This should be done without judgement, advice, and even questions of whys.
September is the World Suicide Prevention Month. If you are facing hardships and suicidal thoughts, please reach out to your beloved ones and seek help from a professional.
