RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - For some people, the day begins with a cup of coffee. For others, a glass of milk is the preferred way to start the morning. Regardless of how it is enjoyed, milk has long been an important source of nutrition for people around the world.

To highlight the importance of milk as a global food, the world celebrates World Milk Day every June 1. The observance was established in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Since then, World Milk Day has served as an opportunity to raise awareness about the benefits of milk and dairy products in everyday life.

As one of the most widely produced agricultural commodities in the world, according to Halodoc (a prominent digital healthcare ecosystem and telemedicine platform based in Indonesia), milk contains a variety of essential nutrients, including protein, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin B12, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, and carbohydrates. These nutrients make milk an important part of meeting daily nutritional needs.

Supporting Bone and Dental Health

One of the most well-known benefits of milk is its role in maintaining strong bones and teeth. Calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D work together to build and preserve bone density, helping reduce the risk of osteoporosis and supporting overall dental health.

Promoting Growth and Muscle Development

Milk contains high-quality protein that is essential for building and repairing muscle tissue. This nutrient is particularly important for growing children as well as adults who engage in regular physical activity.

Strengthening the Immune System

Vitamins and minerals such as vitamins A and D, along with essential proteins found in milk, help support the body's immune system. Adequate nutrition enables the body to better fight infections and maintain overall health.

Supporting Heart Health and Body Functions

Potassium and magnesium in milk help regulate fluid balance and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. In addition, B vitamins and other nutrients contribute to energy production and nervous system function, helping support concentration and memory.

Improving Sleep Quality

Milk also contains tryptophan, an amino acid involved in the production of serotonin and melatonin. These hormones help regulate the sleep cycle and may promote relaxation before bedtime.

Through World Milk Day, people are encouraged to better understand the importance of milk as a source of nutrition that supports health throughout all stages of life. With its wide range of nutrients, regular consumption of milk as part of a balanced diet can help maintain overall health, meet daily nutritional requirements, and contribute to a better quality of life.
