RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Dry skin is one of the most common skin conditions experienced by many people. It can cause the skin to feel rough, appear dull, become more prone to irritation, and increase the risk of premature signs of aging if not properly treated.

In addition to using suitable skincare products, maintaining skin moisture also requires a healthy diet. Research has shown that vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and antioxidants play an important role in supporting the skin barrier, helping the skin retain its natural moisture.

Staying well hydrated by drinking enough water is one of the simplest ways to support healthy skin. A study published in the Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology journal in 2015 found that increased water intake can improve skin hydration, particularly among individuals who previously consumed insufficient amounts of water.

In line with these findings, the Indonesian Society of Dermatology and Venereology (PERDOSKI) notes that skin lacking adequate moisture is more susceptible to irritation and conditions such as eczema. Therefore, PERDOSKI encourages people to maintain proper hydration by drinking enough water each day to help preserve the skin barrier.

Besides adequate fluid intake, food choices also play an important role in skin health. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and avocados, help support the skin barrier and contribute to overall skin health.

Nuts, including almonds and walnuts, are excellent sources of vitamin E, protein, and healthy fats that benefit the skin. Meanwhile, fruits such as bananas provide vitamins and minerals that support skin cell regeneration and help keep the skin healthy.

Orange colored vegetables, including sweet potatoes and carrots, are rich in beta carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A to support skin regeneration. Spices such as turmeric contain curcumin, a compound with antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties that may help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals.

Although certain foods can help maintain skin hydration, experts emphasize that a balanced diet remains the key to healthy skin. Meeting daily nutritional and hydration needs can help keep the skin moisturized, supple, and healthy.
