RRI.CO.ID, Bogor - Sweet beverages are commonly chosen during Ramadan breaking fast to quickly restore energy levels. However excessive sugar consumption without control may trigger various short and long term health risks.
Professor Budi Setiawan from IPB University explained people prefer sweet foods during breaking fast. This tendency occurs because blood sugar levels decrease after fasting for many hours daily.
“Besides being an energy source consuming sweet foods or drinks aims to restore blood sugar levels,” he said on IPB University's website on Wednesday, 18 February 2026. He added that carbohydrates and sugars can also stimulate serotonin production creating pleasant emotional responses.
He affirmed that sugar intake must be limited because it sits at the top of balanced nutrition pyramid. Daily sugar consumption recommendation equals fifty grams or approximately four tablespoons according to guidelines in Indonesia.
Excessive sweet drink consumption during iftar and suhoor may disrupt balanced nutrient intake patterns. Feeling full too quickly from sugary beverages can reduce consumption of vegetables fruits and proteins.
According to him, excessive sugar intake may increase dental caries risk and body weight gain. High sugar consumption can also raise triglyceride levels and worsen risks for heart disease patients.
He recommended healthier beverage alternatives including coconut water and fruit or vegetable juices without added sugars. Natural sweet fruits such as dates are suggested in small portions during breaking fast.
