Plaju Oil Refinery Strengthens Biodiversity Conservation in South Sumatra

RRI.CO.ID, Palembang - Aligning industrial operations with ecosystem preservation, PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional RU III Plaju (Kilang Plaju or Oil Refinery in Plaju) in Palembang, South Sumatra, has reinforced its role as a key driver of regional biodiversity through comprehensive conservation programs spanning endangered fauna care, endemic aquatic breeding, urban forestry, and coastal restoration.
Timed to coincide with National Nature Conservation Day (HKAN) on August 10, 2026, celebrated under the theme Nature Conservation: Working Together to Care for Indonesia's Nature, the state-owned refinery detailed its multi-fronted environmental initiatives across the province.
At the Sungai Gerong captivity area in Palembang, the company actively protects 12 vulnerable sambar deer (Cervus unicolor), comprising four males, six females, and two fawns. To safeguard local aquatic species, Kilang Plaju partners with PGRI University Palembang (Campus C) to conserve endemic belida fish, housing five broodstock and 40 fingerlings of Lopis belida (Chitala lopis), along with 22 Java belida (Notopterus notopterus) broodstock to foster education and community aquaculture opportunities.
Beyond species protection, Kilang Plaju manages 212.83 hectares of green open space across the Plaju Refinery, Sungai Gerong Refinery, Pertamina residential complex, and the Bagus Kuning Golf Course. Along the coastline, the refinery has collaborated with the RDMP Project Sumatra to plant 21,000 mangrove seedlings since 2023 in the Sungsang IV Village Social Forestry Area, Banyuasin Regency, conducting regular monitoring to prevent coastal erosion, provide marine habitats, and absorb carbon emissions.
Refinery executives emphasized that integrating robust environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into corporate operations relies on sustained multi-stakeholder collaboration to create lasting impact.
Area Manager for Communication, Relations, & CSR at Kilang Plaju Siti Fauzia highlighted the long-term commitment required for effective environmental stewardship.
"Caring for nature is essentially maintaining balance. For us, conservation is not merely running programs, but ensuring the sustainability of its benefits for future generations," Siti Fauzia stated in Palembang on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
