RRI.CO.ID, Tanjung - An orangutan that has been sheltering for four days on private land in Habau Village, Banua Lawas Subdistrict, Tabalong Regency, South Kalimantan, highlights the shrinking distance between human settlements and wildlife habitats. To prevent conflict and ensure the animal’s safety, Banua Lawas Sector Police and the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) have deployed personnel at the site while awaiting evacuation.
Tabalong Police Chief, Adj. Sr. Com Wahyu Ismoyo, urged residents to remain calm and avoid actions that could provoke the protected animal. “The Banua Lawas Sector Police have followed up on the report of the orangutan’s presence, and I ask the public to stay calm,” said Wahyu on Monday, 27 July 2026.
Residents report the orangutan has been on the land for about four days, necessitating intervention by the competent authorities to safeguard both the community and the species’ welfare. Responding to the report, Polsek Banua Lawas, officers from the Forestry Agency/BKSDA of Tabalong Regency, the Head of Community Unit (RT) 6, and local residents inspected the site to confirm the orangutan’s presence.
As reported by Antara, officers also urged the public not to approach, disturb, or take any action that could endanger themselves or the animal. Field monitoring shows the orangutan remains on or near the private land.
Authorities have coordinated with relevant agencies to prepare for evacuation. The operation is awaiting the arrival of a team from the Banjarbaru Forestry Agency carrying equipment and sedatives so the procedure can be conducted safely and in accordance with protocol.
While awaiting evacuation, Banua Lawas Police personnel and partners continue to monitor the area to prevent unwanted incidents. As of now, the situation around the site is reported to be safe and orderly.
Tabalong Police commended local residents for promptly reporting the orangutan’s presence to authorities, enabling a fast, coordinated response carried out in accordance with prevailing regulations. ***
