RRI.CO.ID, North Sulawesi - Indonesia's Karangetang Volcano erupted on Sunday, July 12, 2026, while remaining at Alert Level II (Waspada). The eruption occurred from the northern crater on Siau Island, North Sulawesi.

According to Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption began with a weak strombolian explosion. It produced a 100-meter eruption column, loud blasts, incandescent materials, and lava flows from the northern crater.

The lava flowed about one kilometer toward the north and south from the northern crater. Another lava flow extended around 400 meters toward the west-southwest.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Sitaro Regency monitored burning grass near the volcano's summit overnight. The burning materials reflected above fog, creating the appearance of a large fire.

On Monday morning, July 13, 2026, BPBD confirmed the summit fire had been extinguished successfully. Authorities continued monitoring volcanic activity and weather conditions while daily community activities remained normal.

Karangetang, also known locally as Mount Siau, ranks among Indonesia's most active volcanoes. Its volcanic activity has increased since early July, supported by elevated seismic activity recorded by PVMBG.

PVMBG said the volcano's activity status remains at Level II (Waspada), unchanged since January 11, 2025. The agency warned of possible magmatic eruptions, pyroclastic flows, lava avalanches, and rain-triggered lahars.

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) urged residents and visitors to follow official safety recommendations. People should avoid restricted areas within the designated danger zones surrounding the volcano.
