RRI.CO.ID, Rejang Lebong - The rare Rafflesia arnoldii flower was found blooming perfectly in the plantation area of Cawang Lama Village, Selupu Rejang District, Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province, after a long absence from the local area.
The phenomenal bloom was first stumbled upon by 30-year-old Cawang Lama villager Abilio. Since his discovery, a steady stream of nature enthusiasts and curious locals has inundated the plantation to witness the giant bloom firsthand, swiftly converting the agricultural border zone into a viral sensation across various social media platforms.
While previous conservation reports have long spotlighted established state-monitored habitats, this private plantation breakthrough shifts the narrative toward the critical role that local village ecosystems play in preserving Indonesia's rarest botanical treasures. The surrounding environment indicates exceptional ecological health, playing host to an entire cluster of biodiversity.
Local conservationist and Rafflesia observer Saikul Latief confirmed that the area holds immense ecological value. "I went there yesterday to see it. The Rafflesia arnoldii flower is blooming in the plantation area of Cawang Lama Village residents, which borders Kayu Manis Village," Saikul said when contacted on Saturday, May 23, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
According to him, the flower reached peak bloom on Friday, exhibiting an extraordinary color profile. "Last Friday, it was in full bloom with truly extraordinary colors, with five petals. Nearby were also several other Rafflesia flower buds, as well as the habitat of Amorphophallus, commonly known as the corpse flower or kibut," he explained.
The co-existence of multiple unborn Rafflesia buds, or knops, alongside the Amorphophallus, locally known as kibut or the titan arum, underscores the unique fertile composition of this specific location. Saikul noted that the presence of the flower naturally commands massive public fascination because the protected plant is highly selective, capable of growing only within ultra-specific environmental thresholds and precise geographical pockets.
This latest botanical milestone adds to Rejang Lebong Regency's rich history of rare floral sightings. Saikul recalled that Rafflesia arnoldii specimens had previously made consecutive appearances in Selamat Sudiarjo Village within the Bermani Ulu Subdistrict on November 22 and December 16, 2025.
That particular region has firmly established itself as a premier natural habitat for the species, boasting at least seven distinct growth points that feature both five-petal variations and highly unusual seven-petal mutations. The consistent blooming cycles in Selamat Sudiarjo have previously garnered significant international academic prestige, drawing high-profile research delegations from across the globe, including prominent botanical experts from Oxford University in the United Kingdom.
With this new breakthrough in Cawang Lama Village, local observers hope that public awareness regarding habitat preservation will continue to grow, ensuring that community plantations can safely coexist with Indonesia's strictly protected natural wonders. ***
