RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Beyond its role as a premier recreational destination, Ragunan Wildlife Park in Jakarta is redefining its conservation standards by embedding the globally recognized Five Freedoms into its daily animal husbandry protocols.

This holistic management approach ensures that the more than 2,009 animals residing within the 147-hectare sanctuary are protected from physical and mental distress, aligning the park with modern international welfare practices.

The initiative marks a transition toward a more empathetic model of wildlife management. “The application of these five freedoms is vital to prevent animal suffering while ensuring their physical and mental conditions remain stable,” said the Head of Public Relations for Ragunan Wildlife Park, Wahyudi Bambang, in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

Under the first pillar, the park guarantees freedom from hunger and thirst by providing constant access to clean water and nutritionally balanced diets tailored to the specific needs of each species. To address physical discomfort, the park provides appropriate environments, including specialized shelters and resting areas that mimic natural habitats.

Healthcare remains a top priority, with a focus on freedom from pain, injury, and disease. This is achieved through rigorous prevention programs, early diagnosis, and rapid medical intervention for any animal showing signs of illness. Furthermore, the park emphasizes the importance of ethology, the study of animal behavior.

"Additionally, the freedom to express natural behavior is granted by providing sufficient space, supporting facilities, and allowing animals to interact with members of their own species," added Wahyudi, as quoted by Antara.

Psychological well-being is also a core component of the strategy. Freedom from fear and distress is achieved by creating secure environments and minimizing external disturbances. These efforts include mitigating stressors from the surrounding environment and human interactions that could trigger mental pressure on the animals.

Spanning a lush landscape of 147 hectares with over 20,000 trees, Ragunan’s commitment to these ethical standards is evident. This dedication reinforces its position as a leading conservation institution focused on the longevity and happiness of its diverse wildlife. ***
