- The South Kalimantan Forestry Agency is converting organic office waste and leaf litter into high-quality compost to support tropical rainforest rehabilitation.
- The process involves collecting organic materials from various sources, shredding them to accelerate decomposition, and using standardized composting methods with controlled moisture and aeration.
- Raw materials are sourced from the Seedling Technology Center (BPTH), the Great Forest Park (Tahura), and internal government offices to maximize resource utility.
RRI.CO.ID, Banjarbaru - The South Kalimantan Forestry Agency is turning office waste into environmental fuel by converting organic litter into high-quality compost to spearhead the province’s tropical rainforest rehabilitation.
By integrating circular economy principles into forest management, the agency aims to revitalize the ecosystem in Banjarbaru while establishing a more sustainable and self-sufficient model for land restoration.
Head of the South Kalimantan Forestry Agency, Fathimatuzzahra, announced in Banjarbaru on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, that leaf litter and organic waste from administration office complexes are now being optimized through a specialized shredding process. This mechanical breakdown serves as the critical first step in transforming raw waste into nutrient-rich compost.
"We have collected several sacks of organic material derived from leaf remains and litter. These materials are then processed through a shredding machine to accelerate the decomposition process," she said, as quoted by Antara.
She noted that the shredded material then undergoes a standardized composting method focused on precise moisture and aeration control. This organic initiative is designed to support Forest and Land Rehabilitation (RHL) activities across various locations, moving away from a reliance on synthetic alternatives.
"The resulting compost will later be used to support plant maintenance in the forest park area, including supporting forest and land rehabilitation activities in various locations," explained Fathimatuzzahra.
Beyond merely boosting plant growth, the organic compost is essential for repairing soil structure and maintaining a natural nutrient balance without the total dependency on chemical fertilizers.
The program strategically maximizes waste sourced from the Seedling Technology Center (BPTH), the Great Forest Park (Tahura), and internal department offices to ensure no organic resource is left underutilized. By reducing the volume of waste that previously lacked utility, the agency is achieving both ecological value and greater operational efficiency in forest management.
"We are committed to continuing the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly environmental management practices. This is done in line with efforts to preserve tropical forests and improve the quality of the ecosystem in South Kalimantan," Fathimatuzzahra concluded, reaffirming the province's long-term commitment to high-quality ecosystem restoration. ***
