RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Japan have strengthened cooperation in wildlife conservation through the signing of a memorandum of understanding focusing on the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) breeding loan program.
Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni and Shizuoka Prefecture Governor Yasutomo Suzuki signed the MoU as part of efforts to enhance bilateral collaboration in biodiversity conservation.
“This collaboration is a strategic step in promoting the conservation of endangered species through joint efforts between the two countries’ conservation institutions. It also strengthens Indonesia’s conservation diplomacy at the global level,” said Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni on Saturday, March 28, 2026, as reported on the ministry’s official website.

The agreement also aims to deepen relations between Indonesia and Japan and raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity protection.
In implementing the program, both parties affirmed their commitment to animal welfare principles and compliance with international regulations, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
The Forestry Minister emphasized that the collaboration is not merely an exchange of animals but part of Indonesia’s green diplomacy to preserve global biodiversity. He added that the breeding loan program carries strategic value, including supporting public education and raising international awareness of wildlife conservation.
The partnership will be carried out through a technical agreement between iZoo in Japan and Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia, covering arrangements for animal care, transportation, and supervision.
“Program implementation will be conducted carefully and transparently in accordance with national regulations and international standards,” Minister Raja Juli said.
The signing of the MoU was also part of President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to Japan, during which he met Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to strengthen bilateral relations. ***
