RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Seribu Islands Food Security, Marine, and Agriculture Sub-agency (Sudin KPKP) is continuing its effort to manage the local feline population across the island chain through a targeted sterilization program.
On Thursday, July 30, 2026, local authorities conducted surgical sterilizations on 108 domestic and stray cats located on Pari Island, within the South Thousand Islands Subdistrict.
The initiative aims to curb unchecked population growth humanely while reducing the risk of animal-borne diseases in residential areas. Following medical examinations and sterilization procedures, the animals were released back into their local environments in healthier condition. Of the 108 cats processed during the drive, 65 were female and 43 were male.
The sterilization drive was conducted in partnership with animal welfare organization Let's Adopt Indonesia, highlighting ongoing collaboration between municipal agencies and civil society groups to maintain ecological balance and improve animal welfare in Jakarta's coastal territories.
Local officials and sub-agency representatives underscored that humane population management protects both island residents and local wildlife, while fostering public awareness around animal health.
Acting Head of the Animal Husbandry and Health Section at Sudin KPKP Kepulauan Seribu, Sandri Oktama, detailed the objectives and collaborative nature of the initiative.
"Today, 108 cats on Pari Island, Pari Island Urban Village, South Thousand Islands District, underwent sterilization, we hope collaborations like this can continue across the Seribu Islands region," Sandri stated in Jakarta on Thursday, July 30, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Echoing this sentiment, Pari Island Urban Village Head Yusuf noted the positive impact of the program on the local community.
"This program provides tangible benefits for both the community and the animals coexisting in our residential environment, it also raises public awareness regarding the importance of maintaining animal health and welfare. We hope activities like this will continue on Pari Island," Yusuf stated. ***
