RRI.CO.ID, Selayar Island – The Taka Bonerate National Park Office has declared its commitment to mitigating climate change through ecosystem restoration. This step is being taken to support Indonesia's 2030 net sink target by absorbing carbon in the forestry sector.
As reported on the Ministry of Forestry’s website on Monday, 23 February 2026, the office is focused on preventing deforestation and rehabilitating mangroves and coastal areas. This strategy follows current rules for managing the carbon's economic value.
The success of this program depends heavily on the active involvement of the local community. The management invites residents to reforest the small islands by planting thousands of tree seedlings.
“In 2026, 772 seedlings have been planted across an area of 8 hectares,” states the KSDAE Public Relations office.
This activity is part of an effort to increase local timber plants in protected areas. Officers continue to monitor the plants so they can grow well in the harsh island conditions.
A major challenge has arisen because 18.13 percent of the seedlings have died. Bad weather and low rainfall are the main obstacles to plant growth. Sandy soil with high salt content also makes it difficult for roots to absorb nutrients. Additionally, the long distance the seedlings are moved affects their health before they are planted.
Communities traditionally reliant on fishing are now learning how to grow crops on land. Education is provided so residents can maintain the island’s ecosystem and preserve its lush beauty.
