RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - International Translation Day is commemorated every September 30 to recognize translators, interpreters, and other language professionals who help bridge communication across languages and cultures.
In 2026, the International Federation of Translators (FIT) is highlighting the theme “Linguistic Diversity and Language Rights” with the subtitle “The Power of Being Understood”. The theme emphasizes the importance of translation, interpreting, and terminology in promoting linguistic inclusion, equality, and public participation in an increasingly connected world.
The work of language professionals spans various fields, including diplomacy, education, science, law, literature, and international communication. At the United Nations, translators work on a wide range of documents related to the organization's agenda, including human rights, peace and security, and development.
Translation also helps people access knowledge and works from different languages and cultures. With the support of language professionals, information can be conveyed clearly and accurately, allowing communication to take place without being hindered by language differences.
According to the United Nations website, International Translation Day was established through UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/71/288 on May 24, 2017. The resolution recognizes the role of professional translation in connecting nations and facilitating dialogue, understanding, and cooperation.
September 30 was chosen to coincide with the feast day of Saint Jerome, who is known for translating the Bible and is regarded as the patron saint of translators. The observance also serves as a tribute to translators and language professionals who contribute to communication across borders.
International Translation Day serves as an opportunity to recognize the contributions of language professionals while raising awareness of the importance of linguistic diversity. Quality translation can help build dialogue, strengthen mutual understanding, and support cooperation in the global community.
