RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Strengthening academic cooperation between Indonesia and Russia is opening new pathways for Indonesian students to pursue higher education abroad. As part of this effort, the Russian Federation is offering free study opportunities through various schemes designed to attract international talent.
Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Russia, Andrey Omelchuk, explained that foreign students can access high-quality education either through self-funded programs or free schemes, with admissions to Russian universities beginning in June.
“Russia offers broad opportunities for foreign citizens to obtain quality education free of charge, and these opportunities are actively utilized by students,” he said in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Applications can be submitted by selecting a university and sending documents via the institution’s website, admissions committee, the Ru.ID platform, or directly at the university. Free study opportunities are available through two main channels: quotas provided by the Russian government and scholarships awarded to winners or runners-up of Russian or international academic Olympiads.
Omelchuk noted that last year Russia launched a new grant program for talented students. Winners and runners-up of the International Open Doors Olympiad receive comprehensive support packages covering tuition, scholarships, travel, accommodation, and health insurance.
Currently, Russia hosts around 400,000 international students, including approximately 500 Indonesians. Popular fields of study among Indonesian students include international relations, management, medicine, and oil and gas, alongside technical disciplines such as computer science, mathematics, and information technology.
Russian degrees are recognized in more than 180 countries and are officially acknowledged in Indonesia without complex verification procedures. “We strive to ensure that talented foreign students can fully focus on their studies and feel comfortable during their time in our country,” Omelchuk added.
Indonesian Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, emphasized that cooperation with Russia is being strengthened through agreements covering student, faculty, and researcher exchanges, joint research programs, scholarships, and language and cultural promotion.
“I believe higher education must serve as a bridge of civilization. This collaboration will open more opportunities for the young generation of both countries to learn, innovate, and contribute to a better future,” he said. ***
