RRI.CO.ID, Depok - The University of Indonesia (UI) has signaled its readiness to take on a leading role in driving research collaboration across the Asia-Pacific, following a courtesy visit from the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU).

UI’s Deputy Rector for Academic Affairs, Mahmud Sudibandriyo, said that the visit on Friday, May 8, 2026, was not only about strengthening international academic networks but also about creating opportunities for research universities in the region to design collaborative models that respond directly to global societal needs.

“We see the importance of connecting cross-ecosystem research with experiential learning so that students and faculty can contribute directly to real-world solutions,” he explained, as quoted by Antara.

UI highlighted the need for greater participation in APRU programs, particularly in submitting initiatives that could become part of the consortium’s portfolio -- whether as a lead university or a participating institution.

The university also stressed the importance of clear procedures and accessible information to encourage member universities to propose collaborative programs relevant to academic and research priorities in the Asia-Pacific.

Through this meeting, UI aims to leverage APRU’s communication platform to expand the visibility of its international academic programs, including student exchanges, international conferences, and collaborative research activities, ensuring broader participation from APRU member countries.

Both sides agreed to strengthen ongoing communication in designing future collaborative programs that go beyond academic mobility, focusing instead on advancing research, educational innovation, and tangible contributions to global society.

The visit reaffirmed UI’s position as a world-class research university actively engaged in international academic networks. It also underscored UI’s commitment to expanding its role in knowledge development, education, and providing solutions to global challenges through strategic collaboration with leading higher education institutions worldwide.

The APRU delegation was led by Chief Executive Thomas Schneider, marking a step forward in reinforcing international academic ties in the Asia-Pacific and highlighting UI’s ambition to serve as a driving force for cross-border research collaboration.

Headquartered in Hong Kong, APRU is a consortium of leading research universities from Asia-Pacific, the Americas, and Oceania. The organization focuses on cross-country collaboration in research, higher education, innovation, and responses to global challenges such as climate change, global health, food security, digital transformation, and sustainable development. ***
