RRI.CO.ID, Bekasi - Indonesian Elementary and Secondary Education Ministry (Kemendikdasmen) is arranging accommodations for the Academic Ability Test (TKA) to ensure accessibility for junior high school students, including those with special needs.
These accommodations apply to students in both special needs schools and inclusive schools. “These accommodations are not only for students in special needs schools, but also for students with special needs in regular schools,” said Rahmawati, Head of the Education Assessment Center at the Ministry, in a media release on the junior high school academic test in Bekasi City, West Java, on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
She explained that the test questions have been adapted to the needs of participants. Adjustments are made based on each student’s disability to ensure they can take the test to the best of their ability.
Students with visual impairments receive questions with minimal images, presented in sentence form and compatible with screen readers. These questions are read aloud using a screen reader application to help participants understand the content.
In contrast, deaf participants receive questions with more visuals and simpler sentences. “Deaf participants are stronger visually than in understanding complex vocabulary,” Rahmawati said.
The Ministry's Elementary and Secondary Education Policy Agency Head Toni Toharudin stated that his office has received input on implementing the Academic Ability Test for students with special needs.
This includes suggestions on exam schedules. Several schools have proposed holding exams to accommodate students with disabilities, who need more time to prepare. “There is a suggestion that students with disabilities take the day session to avoid rushing,” Toni said.
He confirmed that the Ministry continues to evaluate the overall implementation of the academic test to ensure that the inclusive education system operates optimally. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Martina)
