RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Children’s interest in reading is facing increasing challenges in the digital era, as gadgets and instant visual content often attract more attention than books. This condition has encouraged parents and educators to adopt more relevant and engaging approaches to build reading habits among children.
Reading interest does not develop instantly, but rather through consistent habits. Establishing a daily reading routine is considered one of the simplest yet most effective steps. Such habits can help children become more familiar with books from an early age.
Integrating reading with technology is seen as a modern approach that aligns with current trends. Children can be introduced to e-books, reading applications, and interactive stories that are visually appealing. In this way, gadgets can function not only as entertainment devices but also as tools to support literacy development.
In addition, storytelling methods can be delivered in more contemporary formats. The use of audio stories or short videos as an introduction before reading can help children feel more connected to the content. This approach also makes reading activities more engaging and enjoyable.
A supportive environment is another key factor in fostering reading habits. Providing a comfortable reading space and access to various reading materials can significantly increase children’s interest. Printed and digital books can complement each other in supporting literacy development.
A study published in the Jurnal Pendidikan Tambusai (2023) found that a 15-minute reading habit before study time can improve children’s reading interest and comprehension. The study highlights that consistency plays a more important role than duration in building effective reading habits.
Therefore, encouraging children to develop a love for reading in the digital era does not necessarily mean limiting their use of technology. Instead, technology can be utilized as a bridge to create more engaging and adaptive reading habits. This approach is expected to help shape a literate, critical, and future-ready generation.
