RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) lawmaker Lestari Moerdijat has called for strengthening inclusive education by enhancing teachers' skills.

“Efforts to increase the number of teachers capable of educating children with special needs must be implemented immediately to ensure quality education services for every citizen,” Lestari said in Jakarta, as quoted on the DPR RI website on Monday, March 16, 2026.

According to data from the Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) as of September 2025, Indonesia had 363,921 students with disabilities. Of these, 199,375 were enrolled in 60,910 inclusive education (SPPI) schools.

However, only about 15 percent of these schools have teachers for children with special needs (GPK), a situation seen as hindering equal access to education services.

Lestari, also Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), emphasized the need for consistency in the government’s commitment to increasing the number of special needs teachers.

She expressed support for the government’s plan to provide training for teachers this year to equip them with the skills to assist children with special needs.

Lestari also urged cooperation between the central government, regional administrations, and the community. “Synergy from all parties is essential so that fair and equitable inclusive education services for every citizen can be realized immediately,” she said. ***
