New High-Vitamin C “Fruit Leather” Snack Made From Gamindo B Oranges

RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has just unveiled its latest breakthrough, Gamindo B Orange Fruit Leather. This variant of “fruit leather” is projected to be a snack that is practical, portable, and packed with nutrients.

Fruit leather is a thin, elastic, and chewy sheet with a perfect balance of tangy and sweet flavors. The agency utilizes the Gamindo B Orange—a premium Indonesia’s variety of the Nagami (kumquat) family—as the core ingredient. It claimed that the entire fruit, including the nutrient-rich peel, is processed into this snack.

"This invention is designed to optimize the use of Gamindo B oranges in their entirety while creating a snack that is practical, nutritious, and holds higher economic value," Imro’ah Ikarini, a researcher at BRIN’s Food Technology and Process Research Center, stated on Monday, April 13, 2026,as quoted from the official press release.

Beyond its texture and refreshing taste, this new version of fruit leather boasts impressive nutritional specs for a snack. Gamindo B orange leather contains 83.16 mg per 100g of vitamin C, nearly identical to the vitamin content of fresh fruit.

The product also has an antioxidant activity of 51.72%, and contains crude dietary fiber for digestion. Furthermore, due to its low moisture content, this snack can be kept longer than fresh oranges.

According to BRIN, the production process is by selecting oranges that are crushed into a puree. After that it’s mixed with a bit of sugar and carrageenan, and then dried using a dehydrator until they form homogenous sheets.

The technology developed by BRIN is relatively simple, making it highly accessible for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to adopt. This method provides a solution for farmers to prevent post-harvest waste. Since it’s a locally acquired product, it could also increase their economy through commercialization of the fruit leather.
