RRI.CO.ID, Serang - Kue putu remains one of Indonesia’s most cherished traditional snacks, maintaining its popularity to this day. The distinct aroma of pandan paired with a molten palm sugar filling continues to be a primary draw for culinary enthusiasts.

Typically crafted from rice flour and filled with palm sugar, kue putu is steamed inside bamboo tubes. This unique steaming process produces a signature whistling sound, which traditionally serves as a hallmark for street vendors roaming residential neighborhoods.

Dedi Kurniawan, a traditional culinary advocate in Serang, Banten Province, emphasized that kue putu carries significant cultural value, having been passed down through generations. He believes its presence must be preserved amidst the surge of modern food trends.

According to Dedi, the snack’s simplicity is its greatest strength. "Kue putu is simple, yet it possesses an irreplaceable character through the harmonious blend of rice flour, palm sugar, and grated coconut," he said on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

He further explained that the experience of enjoying kue putu is as vital as the flavor itself. The sound of steam escaping the bamboo cooker and the warmth of the serving offer a profound sense of nostalgia for the community.

Dedi noted that various innovations are being implemented to ensure the survival of kue putu. Some entrepreneurs have begun introducing flavor variations and modern presentations without compromising its original essence.

"Today, we see creations with contemporary toppings, yet they maintain the base flavor of kue putu so that its identity remains intact," he remarked.

He expressed hope that the younger generation will continue to recognize and appreciate traditional snacks. For him, the preservation of local culinary heritage is a crucial part of maintaining the nation's cultural identity.

With its distinctive taste and strong historical roots, kue putu is more than just food, it stands as a symbol of Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage that deserves to be safeguarded for the future. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
