RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia is renowned for its abundant spices, recognized worldwide. In addition to its delicious cuisine, the country is proud of a variety of unique traditional ginger drinks. This spice offershaving warmth and health benefits passed down through generations.
The first drink is Bandrek, originating from the Pasundan region of West Java. This beverage has been around since the Dutch colonial era to warm up plantation workers. In the book “The Secret to Making Beverages,” it is explained that bandrek is made by boiling water and sugar. Then, ginger, pepper, and ground areuy chili are added for a spicy flavor.
Next is Wedang Ronde, which is very popular in Java at night. This drink consists of chewy sticky rice balls served in warm ginger broth. Ginger, sugar, lemongrass, and cloves are the main ingredients of the broth. The addition of peanuts and slices of white bread makes the flavor even richer and more filling.
West Java also has Bajigur, which at first glance is similar to bandrek but still unique. The main difference lies in the use of coconut milk, which gives it a thicker texture. Bajigur is made from ginger, palm sugar, coconut milk, and sometimes a pinch of salt. The fragrant aroma of pandan leaves is often added to enhance the enjoyment when served with boiled sweet potatoes.
There is also Kembang Tahu, which serves soft silken tofu in ginger sauce. This dessert is the result of Chinese cultural influence that has been adapted by the local community. The soft texture of the tofu, like pudding, melts when it meets the warmth of the sweet ginger sauce. This combination creates a soothing taste experience that is loved by many people.
Finally, there is Bir Pletok, an iconic drink for the Betawi people in Jakarta. Although its name contains the word “beer,” this drink is completely alcohol-free and safe to consume. Bir Pletok is touted as a symbol of luxury and success in various important community celebrations. Its natural red color comes from secang wood mixed with ginger and cinnamon.
This variety of ginger drinks is a true reflection of cultural richness and local wisdom. Exploring these traditional ginger drinks is a great way to experience Indonesia's rich flavors and healthy lifestyle.
