RRI.CO.ID, Ternate - Lalampa, a traditional snack favored by the people of North Maluku during Ramadan when breaking their fast, has been registered as a communal intellectual property (KIK).
Lalampa is a traditional snack made from glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk, filled with shredded skipjack tuna or mackerel seasoned with spices, sautéed, wrapped in banana leaves and grilled until fragrant. This snack has a savory and rich flavor.
Fatma, a lalampa seller near Gamalama Market, said that lalampa has become a popular cuisine among the residents of North Maluku. She makes the lalampa herself.
"Especially during the fasting month, lalampa is in high demand and sells out quickly. Profits from lalampa sales can reach hundreds of thousands of rupiah a day," said Fatma, as quoted by Antara on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Fadli, a lalampa buyer in Ternate, said his family loves lalampa as a dish for breaking the fast. Besides its delicious taste, lalampa cake has become a tradition passed down through generations, a must-have on the dining table when breaking the fast.
Head of the Ministry of Law's North Maluku Regional Office, Budi Argap Situngkir said that North Maluku possesses a wide range of possible community intellectual property rights (KIK), including indications of origin, traditional knowledge, traditional cultural expressions, potential geographical indications, and genetic resources, all of which are currently registered as community IP.
Argap explained that an indication of origin is a sign or label that indicates the country or region of origin of a good/product, without being linked to natural environmental factors.
"This potential communal IP deserves to be protected through registration with the Directorate General of IP (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law. The role of the regional administration and the community is crucial in supporting IP protection to prevent claims from other regions," Argap said in Ternate on Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Based on data from the Ministry of Law's Directorate General of IP (DJKI) database, lalampa is listed as a communal IP in the Indication of Origin category from the Sula Islands with registration number IA822025000055. ***
