KBRN, Sungailiat: Ketan duren, a traditional snack combining the rich flavor of durian with glutinous rice, remains a highly sought-after delicacy. The pairing of the fruit's sweet, creamy profile with the chewy texture of steamed sticky rice makes this dish a frequent home-cooked favorite and a popular seasonal offering.

Ema, a resident of Sungailiat in Bangka Belitung Islands, shared that she typically prepares ketan duren at home whenever durian season arrives. She noted that the ingredients are accessible and the preparation process is relatively straightforward.

"I often make ketan duren during the peak of the season because the ingredients are easy to find and my family loves the taste," said Ema on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Meanwhile, Icut, a local enthusiast of the dish, finds it to be a versatile snack suitable for any occasion, particularly as a companion to coffee or tea. She highlighted that the synergy between the glutinous rice and the durian creates a distinct and memorable flavor profile.

"The texture is soft and the durian flavor is prominent, making it a very enjoyable snack," remarked Icut.

Ketan duren serves as a prime example of a simple durian-based preparation that has stood the test of time. It continues to be cherished by the public, appearing both as a staple in household kitchens and as a signature treat whenever the fruit is in season.
