Indonesia Advances Green Hydrogen Ecosystem to Drive Energy Transformation

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s national energy transformation continues to advance toward a low‑carbon system. PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), a subholding of the state‑owned electricity company PLN, is developing a green hydrogen ecosystem to support industrial needs and accelerate the country’s energy transition.

The initiative aims to build a low‑carbon hydrogen market covering industrial sectors, power generation, and sustainable aviation fuel. It forms part of PLN Group’s long‑term strategy to strengthen its clean energy mix.

“In addition to developing renewable energy, nuclear power plants, Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), energy storage, and the Green Energy Super Grid, the PLN Group is also incorporating hydrogen and ammonia into its long‑term strategy to support a low‑carbon energy system,” said PLN EPI Vice President for Strategy and Biomass Business Development, Anita Puspita Sari, in Jakarta on Sunday, July 26, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

In its initial phase, PLN EPI is targeting industrial sectors with high hydrogen demand, including fertilizer and ammonia production, oil refineries and petrochemicals, steel and metals, and chemicals. These industries are projected to become the first markets for green hydrogen development in Indonesia.

Beyond industrial applications, PLN EPI is exploring opportunities to produce electro‑Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e‑SAF). The technology combines green hydrogen with carbon dioxide captured from emissions to produce synthetic crude, which is then processed into low‑carbon aviation fuel through a closed‑loop carbon concept.

Anita said demand for e‑SAF is expected to rise in line with international regulations promoting sustainable aviation fuel to reduce emissions in the aviation sector.

She added that Indonesia has significant potential to become a key player in the green hydrogen industry, supported by abundant renewable energy resources. “The next challenge is to accelerate ecosystem development, technological mastery, and market creation capable of supporting sustainable hydrogen growth,” she said.

By strengthening technology, supply chains, and the green hydrogen market, PLN EPI aims to accelerate the national energy transition while supporting the creation of a cleaner, more resilient, and sustainable energy system in Indonesia. ***
