RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesian Financial Services Authority (OJK) is exploring opportunities to strengthen sustainable financing policies in the banking sector, including the possibility of setting green loan disbursement targets to accelerate Indonesia’s net-zero emissions (NZE) agenda.

Head of the OJK’s Department of Surveillance and Integrated Financial Services Sector Policy, Agus Firmansyah, said green credit schemes are currently implemented voluntarily by banks.

“However, in the future, it is possible that we will start encouraging banks to set green credit targets,” Agus said after the launch of the Green SME Empowerment Program with the Ministry of Industry in Jakarta on Thursday, July 23, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Agus explained that the policy is expected to encourage banks to be more active in channeling financing to sectors that support the green economy, including SMEs. “So that they are also more active in providing financing for green SMEs,” he added.

In addition to expanding green financing, the OJK aims to gain a clearer picture of the financial services sector’s contribution to the government’s NZE program. “So that we can better understand how much green credit has already been disbursed in Indonesia by banks, as we also support the government’s goals to achieve net zero and other objectives,” Agus said.

He noted that the Green SME Empowerment Program launched by the Ministry of Industry aligns with OJK’s policy to strengthen sustainable financing. The program is designed to encourage SMEs to adopt more competitive and eco-friendly business practices and to serve as a model for green industrial transformation across regions.

Meanwhile, OJK Chief Executive of Banking Supervision, Dian Ediana Rae, expressed optimism that MSME loans will post positive growth through the end of 2026. “The OJK, together with the government, continues to strive to drive SME growth to realize an inclusive and sustainable national economy,” he said.

Dian revealed that MSME lending in May 2026 grew by 0.60 percent year-on-year after contracting earlier in the year. Micro and medium-sized business loans primarily drove this growth, although MSME lending remained weak amid pressures on purchasing power and shifts in consumer spending patterns. ***
