  • Batam secured an additional 300 MW of electricity through the Batam 3 and Batam 4 combined-cycle gas and steam power plant projects to meet rising industrial demand.
  • The expansion is expected to strengthen investor confidence, support Nongsa Digital Park's data center growth, and enhance Batam's long-term energy reliability.

RRI.CO.ID, Batam - Batam, Riau Islands Province, is aggressively fortifying its energy infrastructure, securing a 300-megawatt (MW) power capacity expansion through the Batam 3 and Batam 4 combined-cycle gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) projects to sustain its rapid influx of high-value foreign investments.

The major capacity injection comes as Batam experiences an unprecedented boom in energy-intensive industries, notably the sprawling digital data center hub inside the Nongsa Digital Park.

Recognizing that infrastructure readiness is the ultimate catalyst for regional development, the local municipal administration has strongly thrown its weight behind the expansion to ensure a stable, uninterrupted power grid for multinational corporations.

Batam Municipal Administration Secretary Firmansyah underscored the strategic necessity of the project on Friday, July 17, 2026, emphasizing that energy security directly dictates the pace of regional modernization.

"A reliable electricity supply is one of the main factors in driving investment growth and regional development. Energy demand will continue to increase in tandem with the rapid development of industry in Batam," Firmansyah stated in an official press release, as quoted by Antara.

The statement followed the formal finalization of the Power Purchase Agreement (PJBTL) for the 2 x 150 MW Batam 3 and Batam 4 plants at the PLN Batam Corporate Office on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

The agreement was signed by Dalle Energy Batam President Director Imron Gazali and PLN Batam President Director Kwin Fo, with Swedish Ambassador to Indonesia Daniel Blockert witnessing the proceedings.

Firmansyah noted that the 300 MW infrastructure boost serves as a structural backbone for Batam's long-term economic layout. "The presence of this additional electricity supply will further boost investor confidence to inject capital into Batam," he assured.

"The reliability of power and water supplies stands as an essential advantage that Batam possesses in supporting the investment climate. The administration continues to make efforts to attract investment, including for the development of the data center zone in Nongsa Digital Park," he added.

Concurrently, PLN Batam President Director Kwin Fo observed that the island currently occupies a pivotal position in regional trade due to the convergence of heavy manufacturing, digital economic zones, data storage infrastructure, and rising household consumption.

To match this growth, the state utility provider is systematically overhauling its grid architecture across the generation, transmission, and distribution spectrums.

"The signing of this power purchase agreement is a strategic step to reinforce the reliability of Batam's electricity system. This is also part of PLN Batam's commitment to supporting economic growth and creating a conducive investment climate," Kwin Fo remarked.

The utility chief concluded by stating that robust synergy among energy providers, industrial actors, municipal regulators, and international strategic partners remains the absolute key to ensuring that future energy requirements are met reliably, efficiently, and sustainably.

With the new grid expansion online, Batam positions itself to comfortably accommodate manufacturing spikes, expand its industrial parks, and anchor the digital economic transformation sweeping across the region. ***
