RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Nurul Arifin, believes the signing of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran to defuse the Middle East conflict will positively impact the Indonesian economy. She believes regional stability will directly impact global trade, energy prices, and the rupiah exchange rate.

"Indonesia will clearly experience a positive impact. Import and export activities, which are the foundation of the national economy, will resume more smoothly," Nurul Arifin said on the sidelines of Commission I's special visit to Yogyakarta on Thursday, 18 June 2026, as quoted from the House press release.

Nurul explained that the easing of tensions between the United States and Iran would open up opportunities for global economic stability after months of conflict in the Gulf region triggered uncertainty in international markets. One of the most significant impacts would be the possibility of reopening the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic global shipping lane.

"With the signing of this MoU, at the very least, the Strait of Hormuz can be reopened. This is certainly positive for the global political and economic climate, as global energy distribution will become smoother," she said.

Nurul, of the centrist Golkar Party, added that stability in the Middle East also has the potential to stabilize the U.S. dollar exchange rate and allow strengthening of developing countries' currencies, including the rupiah. This situation is considered to have a positive impact on national economic activity.

"If the situation there stabilizes, oil prices could potentially fall, the dollar exchange rate would be more stable, and the rupiah could also strengthen. So, the impact will be felt not only by the countries involved in the conflict but also by other countries, including Indonesia," she explained.

Nurul believes that improving global economic conditions will help alleviate the economic pressures currently being felt by various countries. She cautioned that economic turmoil often impacts domestic social and political conditions.

"This economic strengthening is also expected to mitigate the various upheavals arising from global economic pressures. Many political issues stem from economic pressures, so when the economy improves, national stability will also be better maintained," she said.

While welcoming the peace initiative, Nurul noted that the signed agreement is still a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a 60-day validity period. Therefore, further discussions are needed on several strategic issues, including Iran's nuclear program and the lifting of economic sanctions imposed by the United States.

"There are still many things to be agreed upon. I hope all parties can exercise wisdom and political maturity so that this peace process doesn't stop at just an MoU, but develops into a more permanent agreement for the sake of global stability," she said.
