- The rupiah gained 82 points, or 0.46 percent, to IDR 17,778 per US dollar on Monday morning as hopes of a US-Iran peace agreement boosted risk appetite and weighed on the US dollar.
- Analysts said easing Middle East tensions and the prospect of reopening the Strait of Hormuz could support the rupiah, which is forecast to trade between IDR 17,750 and IDR 17,850 per US dollar.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's rupiah strengthened against the US dollar on Monday morning, June 15, 2026, supported by growing optimism over a potential peace agreement between the United States and Iran that improved global market sentiment.
The rupiah appreciated by 82 points, or 0.46 percent, to IDR 17,778 per US dollar. It previously closed at IDR 17,860 per US dollar.
Currency analyst Lukman Leong of Doo Financial Futures said, expectations of a diplomatic breakthrough between Washington and Tehran have encouraged investors to move toward riskier assets while pushing crude oil prices and the US dollar lower.
“The rupiah has the potential to strengthen further against the US dollar amid rising hopes for peace in the Middle East, which are triggering risk-on sentiment and a decline in global crude oil prices,” Leong said on Monday, June 15, as quoted by Antara.
Market sentiment was also influenced by reports that an interim peace agreement between the United States and Iran had been reached. According to Iranian news agency Mehr, citing a draft memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington, a final agreement would later be endorsed through a United Nations Security Council resolution.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Kazem Gharibabadi previously said the memorandum had been finalized and is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on June 19.
Under the draft agreement, the United States would commit to respecting Iran’s sovereignty and refrain from interfering in its domestic affairs. The document also outlines that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen within 30 days after the memorandum is signed by both sides.
Based on these developments, Leong projected the rupiah to trade within a range of IDR 17,750 to IDR 17,850 per US dollar. ***
