RRI.CO.ID, Houston – Pertamina continues to expand strategic initiatives based on global collaboration to drive an increase in national oil and gas production. This is reflected in the meeting between Pertamina’s Deputy Director General, Oki Muraza, and the Head of the Petroleum Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines, Jennifer L. Miskimins.
In an official statement on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the meeting centered on the theme “Collaboration for Supporting the Production Increase,” with a focus on strengthening education and research as the foundation for boosting oil and gas production, particularly from unconventional resources.
Both parties discussed opportunities for strategic cooperation, including joint research on complex reservoirs, the development of unconventional oil and gas exploitation technologies, and the enhancement of human resource capacity through continuing education programs and academic exchanges. This approach is considered crucial to addressing the challenge of declining production from conventional oil and gas fields that have entered a mature phase.
Oki Muraza emphasized that the company is currently undertaking various efforts to boost national oil and gas production. “Pertamina is currently focused on developing existing fields while also promoting the development of unconventional reservoirs. To that end, we continue to strengthen our capabilities, knowledge, and technological expertise to support sustainable production optimization,” he said.
From an academic perspective, the Colorado School of Mines is recognized as one of the world’s leading institutions in the fields of energy and petroleum engineering, with a particular strength in the development of technologies and research on unconventional resources, including shale oil, tight oil, and oil shale. Its experience in developing low-permeability reservoirs and mastery of technologies such as hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling make the Mines a strategic partner in supporting the transformation of Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas industry.
Jennifer L. Miskimins stated that her institution welcomes this collaboration opportunity and is ready to provide support in line with its expertise, particularly in the development of technology and scientific approaches for unconventional oil & gas.
The discussion also covered opportunities for trilateral collaboration involving Pertamina University as part of efforts to strengthen the national education and research ecosystem. This collaboration is aimed at developing joint educational programs, establishing a research center for unconventional oil and gas in Indonesia, and strengthening industry-driven curricula.
This step is considered strategic in building technological self-reliance while ensuring the sustainable development of human resources in the energy sector. Integration between industry and academia is expected to accelerate the technology transfer process more effectively.
As part of its long-term strategy, Pertamina continues to promote the development of unconventional oil and gas to offset the natural decline in production from conventional fields. Resources such as shale oil, tight oil, and coalbed methane are considered to have significant potential, although they require more complex technological and engineering approaches.
