RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The rupiah continued to strengthen against the U.S. dollar through the close of trading on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. Bloomberg data showed the currency rose 0.21 percent, or 36 points, to IDR 17,387 per USD.
Currency market analyst Ibrahim Assuaibi said the rupiah’s gain was driven by positive market response to President Trump’s statement. “Trump said he would temporarily halt ‘Project Freedom’ in the Strait of Hormuz, citing progress toward an agreement with Iran,” Ibrahim noted in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 7, 2026.
However, Trump also stated that his blockade of Iranian ports would remain in place, while Iran has yet to respond.
Global oil prices eased slightly but stayed high, with Brent crude trading around USD 108 per barrel and WTI crude at USD 100 per barrel.
Domestically, market participants are closely watching Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa’s remarks on accelerating economic growth. “The achievement of 5.61 percent growth indicates the national economy is moving in a stronger direction,” Ibrahim said, quoting Purbaya.
Even so, he added, the acceleration has not been fully reflected in market sentiment, with investors still cautious and driving capital outflows. The government is expected to maintain growth momentum in the next quarter through follow-up policies, strengthened coordination with Bank Indonesia (BI), and an additional stimulus package to boost activity.
“With these measures, economic acceleration is expected to continue, positively impacting businesses and market confidence,” Ibrahim said.
He also noted that the Q1-2026 growth figure of 5.61 percent has drawn criticism, with some economists questioning the calculation in light of consumer confidence data. BI’s Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) fell to 122.9 in March 2026, down from 127 in January. (Gusti Panji/Lasti Martina)
