RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian stock market closed slightly lower in today's trading. The main index dropped by a slight margin to reach 6,518.

During the session, the index moved between 6,495 and 6,566. Several large companies like BUMI and TLKM weighed down the market .

This slight drop matched the general trend across most Asian markets. However, the overall loss in the Indonesian stock market was very limited.

Unlike the stock market, the Indonesian Rupiah conversely gained strength today. The local currency closed higher at 17,685 against the US Dollar.

A generally weaker US Dollar helped the Rupiah improve its position. The currency traded in a tight range between 17,670 and 17,710 all day.

Positive domestic sentiment helped keep the Rupiah strong and stable recently. Easing political tension in the Middle East also reduced pressure on the currency.

Meanwhile, the future policies of the US central bank remain unclear. Recent economic reports from America had little impact on global financial markets.

Gold prices attempted to rally during this quiet trading period. By the afternoon, gold was trading at around 4,599 dollars per ounce.
