RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia Governor, Perry Warjiyo, expressed optimism about the rupiah’s outlook following a cabinet meeting led by Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. He said the currency is currently undervalued, but has room to strengthen, supported by solid economic fundamentals.
He cited strong indicators, including economic growth of 5.61 percent, low inflation, robust credit expansion, and high foreign exchange reserves. “These fundamentals indicate that the rupiah should remain stable and tend to appreciate,” he said during a press statement.
The governor further noted that short-term pressures on the rupiah are driven by global and seasonal factors. These include higher global oil prices, rising US interest rates, and increased demand for foreign exchange for dividend repatriation, debt payments, and Hajj-related needs.
In response, Bank Indonesia has outlined seven strategic measures to stabilize the currency. The first step is strengthening intervention in foreign exchange markets, both onshore and offshore, supported by ample reserves.
The second and third measures focus on boosting capital inflows and strengthening fiscal-monetary coordination. Bank Indonesia is promoting inflows through Bank Indonesia Rupiah Securities (SRBI) and has purchased Rp123.1 trillion in government bonds (SBN) from the secondary market year-to-date.
The fourth and fifth steps include maintaining ample banking liquidity and tightening limits on dollar purchases in the domestic market. The monthly limit per individual has been reduced from USD 100,000 to USD 50,000.
The sixth and seventh measures involve strengthening offshore market intervention and increasing supervision of banking and corporate foreign exchange activities. “We are closely monitoring banks and corporations with high dollar purchase activity, in coordination with the Financial Services Authority, to ensure financial system stability,” Perry conveyed.
