- The Indonesian rupiah opened lower this week, weakening 0.17 percent (29 points) to IDR 17,133 per USD against the U.S. dollar.

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The rupiah continued to depreciate against the U.S. dollar in early trading this week, hitting its lowest level on record.
Bloomberg reported that the rupiah opened down 0.17 percent, or 29 points, at IDR 17,133 per USD. At the close of trading last weekend, the currency had already weakened by 0.08 percent, or 14 points, to IDR 17,104 per USD.
A currency market analyst at Mirae Asset Sekuritas, Jessica Tasijawa, confirmed that the rupiah’s latest drop marks an all-time low. “Although the U.S. dollar index has remained relatively stable at the 98 level, the rupiah has fallen to its weakest point ever,” she said in Jakarta on Monday, April 13, 2026.
Jessica noted that the decline reflects persistent external pressure from weakening U.S. economic indicators and heightened global uncertainty. Mirae Asset economist Rully Arya Wisnubroto added that global sentiment at the start of the week leaned toward risk-off. “This follows the failure of the U.S. and Iran to reach an agreement to resolve their conflict,” he explained.
Oil prices remained above USD 100 per barrel amid concerns over potential disruptions to shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. President Donald Trump also threatened to block Iranian ports. “Risk assets are likely to come under pressure, while demand for the U.S. dollar and other safe-haven assets is expected to strengthen,” Rully said.
A currency market analyst at Doo Financial Futures, Lukman Leong, likewise predicted further weakness in the rupiah amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. He pointed out that Trump’s threat to close the Strait of Hormuz after failed negotiations with Iran has intensified market concerns.
“The rupiah exchange rate is expected to trade within the range of IDR 17,050–17,200 per USD,” Lukman said. (Gusti Panji/Lasti Martina)
