RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has taken a pioneering step in climate governance by becoming the first country to test the G20-backed Common Carbon Credit Data Model within its national system.
The initiative, formalized through a memorandum of understanding between the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs and the Climate Data Steering Committee (CDSC), aims to enhance transparency and standardization in the country’s carbon market.
The ministry's Deputy for Food Affordability and Security Coordination, Nani Hendiarti, emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to building a high-integrity carbon market aligned with national climate goals.
“By piloting this global data model, we ensure Indonesia’s leadership in climate action, protect natural resources, and open pathways for sustainable development,” she said in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Under Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025 on Carbon Economic Value (NEK), the government is integrating the model into the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK). The move is expected to align Indonesia’s domestic carbon market with international best practices, boosting investor confidence in carbon trading mechanisms.
CDSC Chair Mary Schapiro described Indonesia’s adoption as a milestone in providing high-quality climate data as a global public good. She noted that the model addresses long-standing challenges in carbon markets, particularly the lack of standardized data across systems, which has hindered transparency and accountability. By offering a uniform framework, the model is designed to prevent double counting and streamline due diligence for market participants.
The pilot follows commitments made at COP30 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to strengthen the integrity of global carbon markets. More than 35 jurisdictions and private sector actors have expressed interest in adopting similar approaches.
Indonesia sees the partnership as a way to create a more efficient and transparent carbon market, positioning it as a cornerstone in achieving national emission reduction targets. ***
