RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The development of the Whoosh high-speed train project to East Java is planned to continue, alongside the financial restructuring of Indonesia-China joint venture company PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia-China (KCIC), the project’s operator.
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), conveyed this information on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. He said his office had met with state asset fund Danantara Indonesia and the Ministry of Finance regarding the planned operation of the high-speed train to Banyuwangi.
“We are carrying out the stages today in parallel,” he said.
Minister AHY stated that the government will continue developing the project while ensuring the completion of the operator’s financial restructuring. He emphasized that resolving KCIC’s financial issues is crucial to the project's continuation and will affect the broader plan to expand the high-speed train network.
“It is best to ensure the financial restructuring of the Jakarta–Bandung high-speed train (KCJB) is complete. This means a solution can be achieved before developing the project further,” he said.
AHY reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing high-speed train services, which are expected to provide the public with the benefits of modern transportation. He added that extending the Whoosh project to East Java could have a significant impact on regional development, with the new line expected to boost economic growth along the route.
“If Jakarta and Surabaya could be reached in just three hours by train, it would transform the development landscape and generate new economic growth along the route,” he said. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Martina)
