RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, emphasized that the trade agreement with the United States does not increase import quotas. This agreement only shifts the source of energy purchases from other countries to the United States.

This statement was made during the 28th anniversary celebration of KAMMI in Jakarta on Sunday, 1 March 2026, as quoted from the ESDM Ministry's website. Bahlil explained that the national import volume remains in line with current needs.

“Our annual LPG requirement is 8.3 million tons, while our national production is 1.6 million tons, so we import 7 million tons per year. The second is fuel oil and the third is crude oil. This is what we agreed upon yesterday in the United States for a purchase of USD 15 billion,” Bahlil stated.

Indonesia's energy needs are still dependent on imports because domestic production is not yet sufficient. However, the government ensures that the total import volume will not increase as a result of this agreement.

He also guarantees that the purchase price of energy from the United States will follow global market mechanisms. This price is claimed to be very competitive compared to suppliers from other regions.

He said, “The import price of the three products worth USD 15 billion from the United States is the same as the market price. So there is no difference whether they come from the Middle East or the United States. The price is the same, and in fact, LPG from the United States is much cheaper than from other countries.”

The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources emphasized that this policy would not interfere with national energy sovereignty. The government is only changing the country of origin of the goods.

“We are only replacing it. So the import volume is the same, only the location is different. So rest assured that the sovereignty of this nation will remain intact. I would never sell out my own country,” he said.

This agreement is outlined in the Reciprocal Trade Agreement (RTA) finalized in Washington DC. The agreement involves President Prabowo Subianto and President Donald Trump. Indonesia is committed to increasing its purchase of energy products with an indicative value of up to USD15 billion. The details include LPG gas, crude oil, and certain refined petroleum products.
