Indonesian Designer Showcases Eco-Friendly Bag Collection in Tokyo

KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesian designer Nila Baharuddin is currently showcasing a collection of handmade, eco-friendly bags at a pop-up store in Daimaru Tokyo, Japan.

Nila is leveraging the exhibition, running from July 2 to 15, 2025, to promote the exquisite work of Indonesian artisans and advocate for the crucial importance of sustainable fashion practices.

She detailed that her collection features bags crafted from natural materials like rattan and cotton yarn, colored with natural dyes, and incorporates recycled materials and unused fabric linings. Each bag is meticulously made by hand using traditional rattan weaving and macramé techniques.

"The choice of rattan and macramé isn't just about aesthetics; it's profoundly about sustainability. We aim to create pieces that are not only visually beautiful but also carry significant meaning and a positive impact," said Nila as reported by antaranews.com.

She also noted that her bags are designed to be unique and are not mass-produced. This approach intentionally counters the fast-consumption patterns that can severely harm the environment.

"By putting the work of local artisans front and center, this collection simultaneously demonstrates how tradition and sustainability can seamlessly go hand-in-hand," she explained.

Nila hopes that this exhibition of eco-friendly bags in Tokyo will foster international cooperation, leading to the creation of more sustainable fashion products. She specifically looks forward to future collaborations with Japanese textile producers to develop fashion items with an even smaller environmental footprint.

Each of Nila Baharuddin's eco-friendly bags is sold for between ¥18,000 and ¥38,000, approximately IDR 1.9 million (USD 115,90) to IDR 4.2 million. ***
