RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Bahari Laut Festival, or sedekah laut (sea thanksgiving), held in Panggang Island, North Seribu Islands, has become a vibrant showcase of local wisdom while opening new opportunities for tourism and community-based economic growth.

Regent of Seribu Islands Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan said the annual maritime thanksgiving tradition, rooted in ancestral heritage, must be preserved as both a cultural safeguard and a driver of local prosperity.

“This is an extraordinary tradition. It should be scheduled year after year to ensure safety while honoring the customs passed down from our forefathers,” he noted in Jakarta on Monday, October 5, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Fadjar emphasized that cultural traditions can be packaged into tourism attractions without losing their authenticity. He pointed to activities such as decorating boats and coastal community celebrations as potential highlights for visitors. “By presenting traditions in their true form, tourists can enjoy the richness of local wisdom,” he said.

He also stressed that tourism development must directly benefit residents, encouraging them to participate as economic actors through homestay management, culinary ventures, and seafood product sales.

Improved transport access, he added, is key to sustaining growth, with plans underway to involve Transjakarta as a sea transport operator alongside traditional vessels.

The regent praised the festival’s community-driven organization and pledged to expand future events with more professional concepts, supported by philanthropic groups and local communities. “Our goal is to enliven tourism in the Seribu Islands so that residents experience real economic gains,” he said.

Panggang Island Village head reported that the festival ran smoothly despite limited preparation time, underscoring the community’s commitment to preserving tradition while embracing tourism potential. ***
