According to an official website Visit Jawa Tengah, Gambang Semarang is a well-known traditional art form that combines dance, music featuring Javanese gamelan, and vocals. The art form has developed since around the 1930s through a blend of Semarang's local culture and the contributions of the city's Chinese-Indonesian community, with influences from Betawi culture.

A Gambang Semarang performance features a variety of traditional musical instruments, including drums, bonang, kempul, gong, flute, kecrek, and gambang. Together, these instruments create the distinctive sound of the performance.
