RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The National Museum of Indonesia is transforming its function from a mere repository of artifacts into an inclusive space accessible to all segments of society, including persons with disabilities. Through interactive programs such as Mantra (Music, Tone, and Tradition), the museum is providing a broad platform for disabled artists to express their work and showcasing the new face of a modern museum that serves without barriers.
“If we are to answer what a modern museum is, it is a museum that actively involves the public in its management,” said Person-in-Charge of the National Museum of Indonesia, Muhammad Rasyid Ridlo during a hearing with the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission X’s Lawmaker in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
He said that current museum management is directed toward ensuring that visitors do not come solely to view collections, but can also actively participate in various activities organized by the institution.
Realistically, the programs presented involve communities, artists, creative industry players, and groups of persons with disabilities. This includes the Mantra (Music, Tone, and Tradition) program, which develops music initiatives and offers space for artistic expression by disabled individuals within the museum.
As reported by Antara, the National Museum opens its spaces for a range of activities, such as gamelan performances, dance, and other artistic events. Management has also developed diverse workshops tailored to the themes of collections and available exhibition spaces. Furthermore, to enhance public access, the National Museum has extended visiting hours on specific days and times.
The institution is leveraging technology to improve service quality and visitor experience, particularly in ticket purchasing and information access. Technology is also applied in conservation processes, collection management, and the protection of museum artifacts.
Efforts to strengthen collection narratives are being carried out by presenting contexts relevant to public life, especially for younger generations. “Collections are placed in contexts that are relevant to people’s lives, particularly those of the younger generation,” said Rasyid. ***
